NVMe vs SATA/SAS: Understanding the Speed Difference
Safe Consulting AS

Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) is the newest protocol for connecting storage devices, such as solid state drives (SSDs), to a computer's motherboard. NVMe is designed specifically for high-speed storage, while SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) and SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) are both older protocols that were developed to connect storage devices to computer systems.

Speed is the biggest difference between NVMe, SATA, and SAS. NVMe is faster than both SATA and SAS, thanks to its ability to take advantage of the high-speed PCI Express (PCIe) bus. NVMe can provide up to 8 lanes of data transfer and use of the latest technologies, like flash memory and controller designs, to achieve faster speeds compared to SATA and SAS.

In comparison, SATA is limited to 1.5 or 3.0 Gb/s, which is significantly slower than NVMe. SATA drives can be connected to the motherboard through a standard SATA cable, which supports slower transfer speeds. On the other hand, SAS drives can be faster than SATA, with a maximum transfer speed of 6 Gb/s, but still fall short of the speeds possible with NVMe.

Another advantage of NVMe is that it supports multiple queues, while SATA and SAS have limited queue support. NVMe also has a lower latency than SATA and SAS, meaning that it can respond to requests from the computer more quickly.

In conclusion, NVMe is the fastest protocol for connecting storage devices to a computer, delivering faster read and write speeds and lower latency compared to SATA and SAS. For applications that require high-speed storage, NVMe is the ideal choice. Whether you're a gamer, a creative professional, or someone who needs to transfer large files quickly, NVMe is worth considering.
